What prenatal massage helps with

Pregnancy changes how weight sits on the body, and the result is a fairly predictable set of aches: low back and sacrum, hips and the sides of the pelvis, upper back and shoulders as the chest changes, and swelling through the legs, ankles and feet.

Prenatal massage is ordinary massage adapted for all of that. Positioning is the main difference — most of the session is spent side-lying with cushions supporting the belly, back and knees, rather than face down or flat on the back. Pressure is moderate and steady rather than deep.

Beyond the physical, a lot of people book it simply for an hour of being looked after during a stretch of life where most of the attention is on the baby. That is a reasonable thing to want.

Afterwards

Most people feel noticeably lighter through the hips and lower back, and it is common to sleep better that night.

Get up slowly at the end of the session and take a moment before standing. Drink water, and if swelling is one of your complaints, keep your feet elevated for a while that evening.

Sessions every two to four weeks work well through the second and third trimesters. Tell us what has changed each time — pregnancy is a moving target and the session should move with it.

Safety, honestly

Prenatal massage is widely considered safe in a normal, low-risk pregnancy, but this is one area where we would rather be careful than accommodating.

Please clear it with your midwife or OB first, particularly in the first trimester, and let us know what they said. We will need to know your due date and anything flagged in your notes.

Tell us before booking if you have preeclampsia or high blood pressure, a history of preterm labour or a current risk of it, placenta previa or abruption, severe swelling or sudden swelling in the hands or face, a history of blood clots, gestational diabetes, or if you are carrying multiples. Some of these mean we adapt the session; some mean we ask you to come back with written clearance.

If you have any bleeding, leaking fluid, contractions, reduced foetal movement, or a severe headache, contact your provider rather than booking a massage.
