If tension has settled deep into your back, neck, or shoulders and a light rub just doesn’t cut it, deep tissue massage is built for you. Our therapist works slowly and deliberately through the deeper muscle layers and connective tissue to break up adhesions and restore healthy movement.

What deep tissue actually helps with
Deep tissue works slowly and with sustained pressure into the deeper layers of muscle and the fascia around it. That is a different job from a relaxation massage, and it suits a specific set of complaints.
The people who get the most from it are usually dealing with something that has been there a while: a neck and upper back that has stiffened from years at a desk or a laptop, shoulders that sit up around the ears, a lower back that aches by mid-afternoon, hip flexors shortened by long commutes, or calves and hamstrings that never quite loosened after taking up running.
It is also the session to book when you can point at the problem. If you can put a finger on the spot, deep tissue is usually the right tool. If you are tired and wound up but nothing in particular hurts, Swedish will serve you better and cost less effort to receive.
Afterwards
Expect to feel loose and slightly heavy for a few hours. Some people feel it the next day the way you would after a hard gym session — that is normal and it is not a sign anything went wrong.
Drink more water than usual, keep moving gently rather than sitting still for the rest of the day, and a warm shower or bath in the evening helps. Skip a hard workout for about 24 hours; the muscle has had enough for one day.
If you are working through something long-standing, a session every two to four weeks does far more than one heavy session and a six-month gap.
When to hold off, or tell us first
Deep tissue is not right for everyone, and there are situations where we will suggest a lighter approach instead.
Tell us before your session if you are on blood thinners, have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or have any history of deep vein thrombosis. The same goes for recent surgery, a fracture still healing, osteoporosis, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or an active flare of an inflammatory condition.
Do not book while you have a fever or an active infection. If you have a new, unexplained pain — particularly one that wakes you at night, radiates down a limb, or came with numbness or weakness — see a doctor before a massage therapist. Massage is good at muscular pain; it is not a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions
Deep tissue uses slower strokes and firmer, more focused pressure on the deeper muscle layers, while a relaxation (Swedish) massage stays lighter and more soothing. Deep tissue targets specific problem areas like a tight lower back or knotted shoulders.
It can feel intense in tight spots, but it should never be unbearable. We adjust pressure to your comfort throughout — just tell your therapist, and effective relief doesn’t require pain.
A 60-minute deep tissue massage is $70 and a 90-minute session is $120 at Sunflower Massage. Prices are before sales tax.
Some people feel mild soreness for a day, similar to after a good workout. Drink water, rest, and it fades quickly — leaving you looser and more comfortable.
